The Asbury SeniorScapes Park Project in Frederick, MD
A First-of-Its-Kind Park for Healthy Aging
Located at Monocacy Village Park in Frederick, Maryland, the Asbury SeniorScapes Park is the first dedicated public park in the region designed specifically with older adults in mind. Built on the principles of accessibility, inclusion, and community wellness, the park demonstrates how thoughtful design can support aging well for body, brain, and spirit.
Designed for All Abilities
Every feature of the park was created to accommodate a wide range of needs, including mobility limitations, balance challenges, and cognitive changes such as dementia. Visitors will find:
-
Specialized fitness equipment for strength, balance, and flexibility.
-
Cognitive and sensory activities that support brain health and engagement.
-
Accessible pathways and seating designed for comfort, rest, and connection.
-
Intergenerational spaces that welcome families, neighbors, and friends of all ages.
By combining physical, cognitive, and social elements, the park provides an environment that fosters independence, dignity, and joyful participation for older adults.
Meeting Community Needs
The Asbury SeniorScapes Park is located in a residential neighborhood identified by HUD as a low-to-moderate income area, with a low-mod percentage of 57.79%. Its placement ensures that seniors who are most in need of supportive, no-cost wellness opportunities can easily access them. Open to the public, the park is a true community asset that removes barriers and creates a safe, welcoming environment for movement, play, and connection.
A Collaboration of Partners
This project was made possible through the shared vision of the City of Frederick, local organizations, and philanthropic supporters, including Asbury Communities. It stands as a model of how municipalities, nonprofits, and healthcare leaders can work together to create meaningful change in the health and quality of life of older adults.
More Than a Park, A Movement
The Asbury SeniorScapes Park is the beginning of a larger effort to reimagine public spaces for an aging population. As the first SeniorScapes project of this size and scope, it sets the standard for parks across the country to become age-friendly, dementia-friendly, and universally designed… with healthy aging at the core of its design principles.
